"What people don’t want to say is that also German colonialists settled in Namibia and they still profit from the fruits of this genocide and that is unacceptable."

 - Moctar Kamara

Between 1904 and 1908, the German colonial forces killed approximately 40,000 - 60,000 Herero and 10,000 Nama. The massacre took place in the German colony Deutsch-Westafrika (today’s Namibia).

Only since 2016 is this crime officially referred to as a genocide by the German government. Currently, the governments of Namibia and Germany are in conversation about possible reparations. Descendants of the victims have at the moment only very little say in that process. Claims of compensation are usually rejected, citing German development aid currently paid to Namibia. In January 2017, a Herero and Nama association issued a complaint against Germany at a court in New York, thereby opening a new chapter in the struggle over reparations and participation in the negotiations thereof.

"I believe it is about time that reparations are paid and that this takes place by mutual agreement, meaning in consultation with the Communities of Ovaherero and Nama, who are suffering to this day from [the repercussions of the genocide]."
